Siempre con nosotros. Before anyone comments on how sexy Sergio is, I just want to give some background on who Antonio Puerta is, since I’m sure not everyone knows. Antonio Puerta was born in Seville and played for Sevilla FC. On August 28, 2007 he died of cardiac arrest. During a league game against Getafe on August 25, 2007 Antonio Puerta collapsed on the field. Palop and Dragutinovic (Sevilla players) rushed over to help him. Dragutinovic stopped Puerta from swallowing his own tongue. He eventually felt well enough to talk off the field. When in the locker room he collapsed again. He died three days later on August 28, 2007. At the time he died, his girlfriend was 8 months pregnant. In respect of his death, a minute of silence took place in every league match. Because Puerta wore the number 16, every sixteenth minute Sevilla’s supporters would purposely create more noise than usual in honor of Puerta too. Sevilla also tried to retire the number 16 shirt, unless Puerta’s son one day wanted to wear his father’s number. David Prieto ended up recieving his friend’s number when the LFP told Sevilla they couldn’t retire a number less than 25. This gif is taken from when Sergio Ramos wore a shirt in his honor when they won the World Cup. Also after the World Cup 2010,  Jesus Navas wore a shirt in his honor. (That’s what Jesus’ shirt said/who he was referring to.) However, in Euro 2008 Sergio Ramos wore a shirt in his honor after they beat Germany. Sevilla also built a statue in honor of Puerta that was unveiled exactly four years after he scored a goal in the Europa League. In summary, Antonio Puerta’s death is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. So before you comment on how nice Sergio looks, just take a moment to think about Puerta, please. It’s been three years since he passed away. RIP, Siempre con nosotros.

RIP Puerta
